2006 kicked off with UMPG
writers winning award after award. January rolled in and Gustavo Santaolalla
picked up a Golden Globe for Best Original Song – Soundtrack for ‘A Love That Will Never Grow Old’, co-written with UMPG’s Bernie Taupin
for the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack.
February followed hot on its tail with Willy Chirino
winning a GRAMMY award for Best Salsa / Merengue Album. In addition to his own songs, Willy
also recorded hits by UMPG’s Juan Marcelo
, Paula de Jesus
and Gabriel Romero on Son Del Alma. In addition, Italo Pizzolante wrote one of the songs in GRAMMY winning Luis Miguel’s Mexico En La Piel. Next came Univision’s Premio Lo Nuestro Awards where UMPG had participation in 12 of the awards. Molotov
took home the Best Rock Album of the year. Martin Urieta (Geminis), Barbara Larrinaga
, Carlos Celles, Armando Larrinaga, Pablo Manavello
, Iker Gastaminza and Pedro Reyna (EMLASA) are the talents behind several of these award winning songs and albums. UMPG’s Wisin & Yandel’s
performance was the highlight of the show. The month closed on a high note when Juan
and Paula’s
La Gocha won the coveted Gaviota de Plata Award for best performance, with ‘Cumbia Y Reggaeton’ at this year’s Viña del Mar Festival.
March followed suite with Santaolalla
taking home an Oscar for Best Original Score also for his work on Brokeback. The ASCAP Latino Awards brought in awards for Jorge Luis Piloto
and Pablo Manavello
, as well as UMPG catalog PRODEMUS writers Wilfran Castillo, Marco Toledo, and Fabio Villegas. Later in the month Santaolalla was honored yet again. This time he was named Person of the Year by CAPIF at Argentina’s Gardel Awards.
With April right around the corner and both the Billboard Latin Music Awards and BMI Latino Awards in sight, several more awards are imminent for UMPG’s talented songwriters.
